The Marche region guards a surprising side, far from the most well-known beaches and art cities. It is that of an inland made of gorges, canyons, villages, and landscapes that change within just a few kilometers, ideal for those who love traveling slowly by camper. The short distances make it easy to move from one stop to the next, alternating nature excursions, stops in small towns, and tastings of typical products.
The journey can begin from the Gole dell’Infernaccio, in the heart of the Sibillini Mountains National Park. Here, the Tenna River has carved out a spectacular gorge over the centuries between Mount Priora and Mount Sibilla, giving life to one of the most suggestive hiking itineraries in the Apennines. The path, shaded by beech forests and crossed by the constant sound of water, leads towards the Eremo di San Leonardo, offering glimpses that seem to belong to another era. A few kilometers further north, the rhythm changes completely. Offida, listed among the Most Beautiful Villages in Italy, captivates with its intimate historic center, elegant squares, and brick alleys. It is the ideal place for a slow walk, perhaps stopping in one of the historic wine bars to taste Rosso Piceno Superiore or Pecorino DOCG, accompanied by local cured meats and the famous Chichì ripieno, a traditional flatbread that tells the story of the territory’s peasant cuisine.
The journey continues towards one of the region’s symbolic places: the Grotte di Frasassi. Inside the Gola della Rossa and Frasassi Regional Natural Park, the karst complex offers a spectacle of gigantic rooms, stalactites, and stalagmites sculpted by water over millions of years. The guided tour allows visitors to enter an underground world that continues to amaze with its size and beauty, making it one of the most important naturalistic sites in Europe.
The last stop is perhaps the least known, but also one of the most scenic. Le Lame Rosse, in the territory of Fiastra, are often defined as the “small Grand Canyon of the Marches.” Pinnacles and sandstone walls, sculpted by erosion, create an unusual landscape where the red of the rock contrasts with the green of the forest. The trail leading to the formations is easy and highly appreciated by hikers, especially in the early morning or at sunset, when the light enhances the shades of the rocks. Between one stop and the next, the camper becomes the ideal vehicle to discover farms, wineries, and small restaurants where you can enjoy vincisgrassi, ciauscolo, Ascoli-style olives, Sibillini cheeses, and wines such as Verdicchio, Rosso Piceno, and Lacrima di Morro d’Alba.
An itinerary that proves how the Marches know how to surprise those who choose to step off the beaten path, turning every stop into a discovery.
